KOI Con celebrates local indie music

Robert Reid, Record staff May 03, 2013

Skeptics became believers in 2010 when 140 bands transformed downtown Kitchener into a one-day, indie music festival.
The Kitchener Ontario Independent Music Festival, otherwise known as KOI Music Festival, marks its fourth anniversary when the celebration of all styles of independent music returns Sept. 13 and 14.
Thanks to KOI Con, however, local musicians and fans don’t have to wait until September to get their independent music fix.
The first of what promises to be an annual event takes place across downtown Kitchener on Saturday (May 11).

Ontario Music Fund an important investment in job creation in Ontario’s music industry

On behalf of our members and partners, Music Canada commends the Government of Ontario for its commitment to accelerate the growth of the music industry in the province with the creation of the Ontario Music Fund announced today.

“Music is a superpower that’s primed and ready to perform for Ontario. It’s a smart investment given the globally competitive advantage we have in the recorded and live music sectors,” says Graham Henderson, President of Music Canada. “Research has shown that targeted support for music will pay off with enormous dividends including job growth, increased investment, tourism and the transformation of Ontario into one of the recording capitals of the world. As we in the music community like to say, music can help.”

Ontario government to create $45M music fund

Arts funding is often viewed by governments as something of a frill or a luxury to be cast away during troubled economic times, but the Ontario government on Wednesday demonstrated that, perhaps, it finally understands what Canada’s music industry has been telling it all along: music means jobs.

That slogan, “Music Means Jobs,” was right there on the podium at a Lee’s Palace, rather unduly crowded for 9 a.m. on a Wednesday morning, as Liberal Finance Minister Charles Sousa and Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport Michael Chan announced plans to create a $45-million Ontario Music Fund to support the production, distribution and performance of music in the province and to promote Ontario-made music across Canada and around the globe.

Conestoga digital arts campus awaits council approval

Terry Pender, Record staff April 18, 2013

KITCHENER — An old downtown building is slated to become a showcase for art, design and new digital content if city councillors approve the Kitchener Studio Project on Monday.
The project would see Conestoga College lease 10,000 square feet of space at 44 Gaukel St. for five years from the City of Kitchener. The college will collaborate on this unique campus with Christie Digital, the University of Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University and some high-tech companies in the nearby Lang Tannery building.
Conestoga College president John Tibbits said the digital media sector is growing and there is a shortage of skilled workers to provide content, which includes graphics, stories and music.

Registry Theatre hosts first fundraiser

The Registry Theatre is one of Waterloo Region’s most dynamic performance venues.

Since opening in 2001, the former Waterloo Country Registry Office and Waterloo Regional Police detachment has been one of the busiest live cultural events including a diversity of music (folk, jazz, classical), dance, film, spoken word and theatre (both community and professional).

The heritage-designated Art Deco theatre is both intimate and flexible.

On Saturday the Registry hosts its first fundraiser, Celebrating Our Arts Community, with all proceeds going in support of the not-for-profit theatre.
