John McKinley, who has opened up for ZZ Top; jammed with Stevie Ray Vaughn and has been performed with the Bob Hope bands, has been involved with the Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario music scene since 1979.
Hailing from Roswell, New Mexico, U.S.A., John started playing guitar at the age of ten and became serious at fifteen; serious enough that he was flown up to Waterloo to join a band from England that was touring at the time.
The John McKinley Band plays “what the crowd wants to hear!” An exceptionally skilled guitarist with roots that stem from The Beatles and being heavily influenced by the Texas and British blues scenes; John has a portfolio of songs well exceeding five hundred. From classic rock to blues to pop, John McKinley and his band play soulful music that the audience loves to “groove” to!
Actively dedicating time to the local music scene, John is a renowned teacher of the guitar. Mentoring many of the young top guitarists and musicians in general, his influence is evident throughout the region, and is one of the many reasons why he has received the 2013 prestigious Mel Brown Award.
