Working with the same band for 15 years can be a little predictable. Knowing what kind of music you’ll put out. Knowing what people you’ll be working with. Knowing what people you’ll expect at a show. It involves a lot of assumption; not to say that working with the same people for a long time isn’t great. You develop a flow with the people you work with. Perhaps feedback is more honest, and the whole music making process is more open because you’re comfortable. But it seems Rob McFee, formerly of Vacuity, is trying to find comfort in spontaneity with his new project, Outer Islands.

Harlan Pepper is at the: Boathouse Thursdays in April

Hamilton roots-rock band Harlan Pepper is getting ready to capitalize on their early success. They’ve recently finished recording their sophomore record (the followup to 2011’s Young & Old — winner of the Hamilton Music Award for Best Roots Recording), and when they haven’t been recording, they’ve been touring. Kitchener fans will get four chances to hear these wise-beyond-their-years gentlemen this April, when Harlan Pepper take on a Thursday night residency at the Boathouse.

Juno-winning Fauth remains humble

Juno-award-winning Julian Fauth returns to his hometown for a regular Friday gig at the Boathouse. Fauth will play the Boathouse every Friday 4 to 6 p.m. in April

 

Julian Fauth is running late.

The clerk at the Greyhound station in downtown Toronto assured Fauth everything was OK. That bus he was about to take was indeed an express run to Kitchener. Turns out that clerk was wrong.

But the hometown fans gathered at the Boathouse in Victoria Park for Fauth’s weekly Friday afternoon gig are always supportive. Fauth was greeted with a round of applause when he walked in 30 minutes late. Boathouse operator Kevin Doyle put a shot in Fauth’s hand, they clinked glasses and tossed backed the drinks.

Blues Festival kicks off 2013 with two events

The Kitchener Blues Festival is kicking into gear for 2013 with two events.
The lineup for the 13th annual TD Kitchener Blues Festival will be announced at a launch party on Friday at the Walper Terrace Hotel.
The annual Youth Legacy Challenge takes place April 14 at Bobby O’Briens.
The launch party presents two blues bands playing simultaneously in two rooms at the downtown hotel.
This year’s featured acts are Irene Torres and The Sugar Devils, an award-winning blues outfit from Toronto, which debuts at the festival in August. Also appearing is Cambridge’s Conor Gains Band, 2013 Maple Blues Award finalists.
